Many Star Trek fans appreciated the entertainment value in the show’s interactive Holodeck. 但对哈利勒·纳西尔来说, the Holodeck is an inspiration for the type of learning environment he’d like to create. He’s currently an Instructional System Specialist for the Army 和 a consultant Multimedia Technical Specialist for NASA — 和 his next career move might involve his own Holodeck.

“I was a Trekkie growing up,” Khalil recalls. “The Holodeck was used to train people 和 create this environment where people can learn or interact. 这就是我的愿景.”

Khalil spent 14 years serving his country in the Army. He saw combat 和 worked as a Technical Writer 和 Instructor, where he created procedural instructions for Army officers. He enjoyed teaching 和 became interested in how photography could bolster his training materials. 在他离开军队之后, he took a few defense contract jobs before realizing that he wanted a formal education to combine his passions. He found 满帆’s 数码摄影 program online 和 decided to take the plunge.

"My interest in digital cinematography was to learn lighting principles… I was already doing it as a photographer, but that doesn’t mean I was doing it right,他说.

Khalil was excited take his first step towards his Holodeck dreams with 满帆’s h和s-on assignments 和 seasoned instructors.

“Every instructor I had was knowledgeable 和 they brought more to the table than just the assignment… The one person that still sticks out is [生产 指导员]詹妮弗·米勒. I went through her course 和 wound up getting the Course Director Award.”

After he graduated from the 数码摄影 program, Khalil used his portfolio to help him l和 a job doing photo 和 video work for NASA. He also rolled straight into his 教学设计 & 技术 master’s degree to enhance his skills. 他特别喜欢 电影making Principles for 教学设计 course, where he learned how to do lighting 和 film for corporate videos 和 training products.

拥有双学位, Khalil continued working for NASA as a photographer 和 cinematographer, 后来又做了顾问. He currently specializes in NASA’s virtual reality content.

“A typical day on the job at NASA consists of looking over the plan that they want to do for virtual reality media. It’s showing that we get buy-in from shareholders 和 the equipment, 确保他们有合适的装备, 解释设置, 然后当然, 拍摄, 编辑, 然后包装特定的产品,他说.

除了做顾问之外, Khalil recently returned to the Army as an Instructional Systems Specialist.

“I specifically am in charge of leveraging distributed learning technologies — such as interactive multimedia instruction, 电子学习, 视频teletraining, 和 simulation — to support soldiers' 和 Army civilians' training 和 education,他解释道.

Saying that Khalil stays busy is an understatement: In addition to his two jobs, 他目前正在攻读教育学博士学位. He loves supporting the Army as a civilian 和 looking to the stars with NASA, but he’s still got interactive education on his mind.

“Going back to the Star Trek example, the Holodeck. That is where I see my future,” says Khalil. “也许, 有一次我写了几本书等等, I’ll create an immersive design company to push the boundaries of conventional learning.”
